Calculate subnet masks, wildcard masks, network and broadcast addresses, usable host ranges, and 32-bit binary representations instantly without external API dependencies.
Subnetting divides a larger network into smaller, more efficient logical segments. Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) uses variable-length prefix masks (e.g. /24) to allocate address blocks flexibly without the rigidity of legacy Class A, B, and C boundaries.
The Network Address (all host bits 0) identifies the subnet itself. The Broadcast Address (all host bits 1) reaches all hosts on the subnet. Because both are reserved, usable hosts equal 2^(32 - CIDR) - 2.
The inverse of the subnet mask (e.g. 0.0.0.255 for a 255.255.255.0 mask) determines which bits to inspect in Cisco ACLs, route maps, and OSPF network statements.
Modern point-to-point router links utilize /31 subnets where both IP addresses serve as host interfaces without wasting two IPs on network and broadcast designations.
Standard engineering reference table for IPv4 Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) prefixes, dotted decimal subnet masks, wildcard masks, and usable host capacities.
