Understanding recursive caching, TTL expiry, and authoritative nameserver synchronization.
When you modify a DNS record at your registrar or managed DNS provider (Route 53, Cloudflare, Namecheap), the change is applied instantly to your authoritative nameservers.
Public resolvers (like Google and Cloudflare) and ISP resolvers cache your old record for the duration of the Time-To-Live (TTL). They will not ask authoritative nameservers for updates until that countdown reaches zero.
As TTL timers expire across disparate global networks over 24 to 48 hours, all recursive resolvers fetch the fresh record, reaching 100% global consensus.
If our global propagation checker shows that public resolvers have updated to your new IP, but your local computer still visits the old server, your operating system is caching the previous lookup. Use these terminal commands to flush your local cache:
ipconfig /flushdnssudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSRespondersudo resolvectl flush-cachesQuery all 10+ standard DNS record types (A, AAAA, MX, TXT, SOA, CAA, PTR) with our comprehensive DNS Lookup tool.
